Cinnamon scrolls and ridiculously good pulled pork at this gourmet foodstore, deli & cafe

Boccone Melbourne brunch breakfast

Look at this pregnant lady! – couldn’t even wait until after lunch to dig into her scroll!

If you follow me on Instagram you’d know that I’ve been in search of those deliciously tempting Kwak cinnamon scrolls and I finally got my fixing finding them at Boccone Gourmet Foodstore, Deli and Cafe in Essendon.

We ordered:

– Pulled pork brioche with jalapeno mayo, pickled red cabbage and Swiss cheese – We all had a taste of this and loved it! The pork wasn’t dry and everything encased between those two brioche buns had such great flavor together. Will definitely be ordering this next time we visit!

– Boccone beef burger. Aged ground beef, confit onion, cheddar, aioli, pickled gherkin on a seeded brioche bun with fat chips. The hubby enjoyed the burger and the fat chips were nice, well cooked parcels of potato that D enjoyed with some chicken schnitzel pieces from my panini

– Chicken schnitzel panini with olives, rocket and sundried tomato from the window display

– two Kwak scrolls – cinnamon and salt caramel flavour. We loved the salted caramel scroll and now I’m on a mission to taste all the other flavours!

– cappucino

– a vanilla slice to take away – the pastry was crispy and the middle was oh so smooth and creamy. We finished it off in no time when we got home.

Ambience:
A lovely gourmet food store, there were tables lined up all the way down one side of the cafe while the other side had gorgeous gourmet products on display such as pasta and cheeses. Clean, sophisticated interior.

Service:
We were seated as soon as we got in and the service was on point.

The Details:
From the cake display to the cheese board menu, Boccone Essendon is a lovely place to have Sunday lunch. There’s even a separate dining area at the back of the cafe where I’m guessing you can book if you’re thinking of having a big family lunch or celebrating a special occasion. Not sure if it was just because we had an active 2 year old with us but our table seemed a little smaller than normal – maybe it was because D had brought along his toys to play with!

Sorry for the pics! – low lighting and a hunger to dig into our lunch meant a few blurry food photos! That and the fact that we need to go on a photography course lol!

Warming up the winter days with this beef stew from VicPies

VicPies Cairnlea

VicPies Cairnlea Town Centre
Cnr Furlong Rd and Cairnlea Dr, Cairnlea

When it gets to cold outside and I feel too lazy to cook or drive anywhere, or I simply need some Viet food in my life, the family and I head straight next door to our local! – VicPies in the Cairnlea Town Centre. I’ve posted about this place before where I gushed about their amazing vanilla slice (see here).

Now that the winter chill is upon us it’s got me craving this pot of warm bo kho with big chunks of meat accompanied by fresh crusty bread.

We ordered:
– Vietnamese-style beef stew with bread $12

Service:
Friendly. The regular coffee maker always says hi to us and Mr D 🙂

Ambience:
Casual cafe with indoor and outdoor seating – I wonder when they’re going to take all those Christmas ball decorations down from the ceiling though!

Details:
When you first see VicPies you can be forgiven for thinking it’s just your average bakery selling pies, slices and coffee. As you approach you’ll see menu items posted on the windows and inside behind the counter showing breakfast options like eggs Benedict and popular Vietnamese dishes including pork crackling Viet rolls! 🙂

Work lunch #6 – Duck crepes at Choix

2015/02/img_9881.jpg
Choix Creperie – 620 Collins st, Melbourne

Soft, smooth crepes filled with an array of sweet and savoury choices.

With a few friends working down at this end of Collins street the recommendations on places to eat are endless! We are spoilt for choice with morning coffee and lunch time haunts and this time Mon took us to Choix.

Not very far at all from Southern Cross station and down a little laneway studded with cafes, we were lucky to grab a table inside this cozy little eatery.

I ordered the duck crepe as Mon had been talking it up and it was perfect! It was served with smiles and was generously filled with soft, well cooked duck. I had a taste of the meatball crepe and it too tasted so good with an unexpected dollop of creamy mayo that went really well with the sauce.

Another place to add to my list of places to return to as I want to try the sweet menu items!

Vanilla slice, slice baby

VicPies Cafe, Shop 6, 100 Furlong Road, Cairnlea

Maybe they should change the name of the store from VicPies to VicRice or something along those lines because after eating lunch here with fellow blogger Consider the Sauce, hubby and I are hooked! – only it’s not their pies that have made our lunch dates there a favourite – we are loving their Vietnamese rice dishes and ca phe sua da (Vietnamese iced coffee)! Oh and also their homemade vanilla slices (only $2.80!) 🙂

Even though it looks a little confused with lunch dishes printed on paper and stuck to the windows and then pies and coffee on offer in the display unit, I guess that’s the charm of this local cafe. VicPies is not at all pretentious – they offer friendly service and fabulous food at reasonable prices – that’s a winner in my books! The dishes are served with lots of tender meat and veggies and even though they don’t have highchairs available, VicPies is pram friendly 🙂

Our favourites are the beef claypot, pork chop and broken rice with fried egg and the beef stew, and of course the smooth vanilla slice. What are your favourite local eats!?

Mummy Mondays – Catch ups and Catwalks

The Urban Ma Kmart launch production The Urban Ma and Daniel on stage

Catch ups and Catwalks

Happy Monday everyone! Hope you all had a winning grand final weekend!

With spring here and summer just around the corner, Baby D and I were excited to check out Kmart’s spring/summer launch this morning. What a start to the week with bright cheerful colours splashed across the stage and upbeat music filling the room – I just wanted to get up there and dance! 😀 It was so great to see “real” people having fun on the catwalk from different sizes to different genders and a mix of ages and backgrounds – such a great vibe in the room! Keep an eye out for the new shop fit outs as Kmart opens up brighter stores, wider styles and a tropical paradise of fashion for the new season!

For lunch I took advantage of the fact that quite a few friends are on mat leave at the moment and so we shared a meal at the huge Brunetti’s institution on Lygon street. With school holidays in full swing  the place was packed and buzzing with happy patrons consuming pizza and dessert goodness.

I can’t believe that Baby D is 11 months old! Where did the time go? I always hear parents talk about how fast kids grow up but I never really realised it until now! I have a nearly one year old little man!!! 😀 Time to get cracking on his birthday party!

How did you spend the last day of September?

Breakfast with truffles in Footscray, oh my!

20130813-104451.jpg

Guerilla Espresso, Shop 228, 81 Hopkins st, Footscray

What better way to enjoy the morning sunshine than brekkie with the hubby, the bubby and one of these bad boys – the infamous truffle toastie found at Guerilla Espresso. After reading about this exquisite sounding concoction  on my Twitter feed the night before, I knew exactly want I wanted for brunch the next day! Found amongst some fresh green grocers in the Footscray market, this cafe is occupies a small space but boasts smooth coffee, a delicious menu and lovely service. The layers of fresh crusty bread, shaved truffle, mozarella, gruyere, watercress and shaved pecorino, with a touch of lemon and olive oil was a beautiful bite of luxury taking me away from the sleepless nights I’ve had of late (the little one has been sick but more of that on another post). This well put together sandwich is already calling me back as I post this blog entry. Make sure you ask for the truffle toastie when you visit Guerilla as it is not up on the menu. Enjoy!

Chase Kitchen – the new kid on the block

Can you tell by my clean plate that I thoroughly enjoyed my meal? 🙂

With Baby D coming down with his first real cold in the past week (more on baby colds and sicknesses in another post!), I haven’t had the time, chance or energy to put into my blog posts the effort and passion that I would like. Sleep-deprived whilst trying to maintain a clean household, sane self and happy family is proving to be tough, let alone keeping on top of my blog posts and social media channels. Slowly but surely I’ll be back with my regular posts and in the meantime you can find me on Instgram: Jacqfruit, Twitter: @jacqui_medilo and Facebook: The Urban Ma.

Now let’s get into it!!! 😀 Unfortunately with all the rushing around I forgot to bring my camera so the pics in these posts are taken on my iPhone. More of a reason to visit this lovely new cafe again! 😉

Chase Kitchen, 80 Hudsons Road, Spotswood

Chase: To pursue, to hunt.

A bright, sunny day in the middle of winter in Melbourne means you MUST get yourself outdoors and make the most of it! That’s what we did on Friday before the rain set in and what we uncovered is sure to be a new favourite! Out and about chasing the winter sun found us in good ol’ Spotswood at Chase Kitchen.

A friend tipped us off about a new player in the Hudsons Road coffee game and being just up the road at the Point Cook Town Centre, we took the freeway straight down to check it out. Right across from Candied Bakery, Chase’s wide open bi-fold windows welcomed us inside followed by the friendly staff and owners. We were originally just going to come in for a coffee but after seeing some tall, juicy burgers whizz past us to eagerly awaiting patrons, we decided to sit down for a meal.

After scanning the easy-to-read menu we quickly decided on the Boston burger and Pulled Pork roll. There are also vegetarian options, smoothies, fresh juices and a kids menu! I like that the menu offers a nice variety of meals and snacks without being too lengthy like other places we’ve been to. When it’s lunch time I just want to eat and not have to read through pages and pages of options.

There is easy wheelchair and pram access and a funky little Ikea highchair waiting for Baby D to occupy. As we wait, we are serenaded by some cool tunes and charmed by the local artwork from Lifestyle DNA that embellish the walls of this 6 day old cafe. Our coffees come out first with beautifully textured milk and a warm and lasting taste that showcases the signature Di Bella blends. Our lunch is brought to us not on the cliche wooden serving boards or mason jars that have become such a mainstay in many Melbourne cafes, but on crisp white plates and I am pleased. I don’t have to try and stay within a narrow piece of wood as I devour my roll – I can be a messy eater! My roll is packed with tender pulled pork and crisp Asian slaw and I like how the roll is soft and easy to bite in to. The better half’s Boston burger is a hit, I’m totally going to try this next time we visit. With its Jalepeno mayo, it gives the meal a slight kick, complimenting the burger and bacon wonderfully!

As we pay for our meals we are greeted with scrumptious cakes and treats baked fresh in the morning to take away with us for dessert. There is a cute little coffee card reel where you can leave your loyalty card ready for your next visit – it means one less card to keep in your wallet and no chance of losing it!

I can’t wait to visit this cafe again and try more of their menu. Be sure to look for Chase Kitchen on Hudsons road – the place with the red frontage. As the owners Jay and Tracey settle in they tell us they are working on the dining room and a funky little beer garden out the back – can’t wait for summer brunches! If you’re looking for a place to get your morning coffee (these guys open at 6.30am), or somewhere for lunch or an all day breakfast 7 days a week, this new kid on the block will have you hooked 🙂
